Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh

The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), is one of the most prestigious institutions for higher studies in Bangladesh. About 5500 students are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies in engineering, architecture, planning, and science in this institution. Currently, the BUET has 16 teaching departments under five faculties and it has three institutes. Every year about 900 undergraduate students and 1000 graduate students in Masters and PhD programs become a part of this University. The University has a strong group of 500 teachers teaching in these departments and institutes. In addition to its own research programs, the University undertakes research programs sponsored by outside organizations, like European Union, UNO, Commonwealth, UGC, etc. The expertise of the University teachers and the laboratory facilities of the University are also utilized to solve problems and to provide up-to-date engineering and technological knowledge to the various organizations of the country.

Energy Research Institute (ERI), Chulalongkorn University, Thailand

The ERI was established under the Chulalongkorn University in 1991 and is based on the policy of the University to emphasize research and academic services as equal to teaching and learning, with an aim to address the energy issues after the world energy crisis in 1973 and 1979. It began with the inception of a committee on energy research to identify and promote research in the area, which was then developed into an Energy and Training Center in 1982 and later into the ERI. ERI's wide-ranging activities include policy research on energy and environment issues, and providing academic services to society in the field of “energy efficiency and conservation, including alternative energy”. ERI's activities are primarily supported by various agencies including- government, international, and private sector. Besides this, the ERI is involved in the issues related to Climate Change and CDM Business Opportunities with an aim to assist Thailand promote clean energy projects. The ERI has built strong networks with key institutions related to energy and environment, ranging from government agencies, private sector, universities in Thailand to international agencies.

Global Industrial and Social Progress Research Institute, Japan

The Global Industrial and Social Progress Research Institute (GISPRI) was established as a Public Interest Corporation in 1988, with an objective to conduct research on wide-ranging issues related to global resources, environment, international regimes, industry, economy, culture, and society, based on the awareness that the role and responsibility of Japan in the international community has been rising with Japan’s increasing economic and social presence. The GISPRI aims to present policy proposals based on its research and surveys for both domestic and international entities, while promoting exchange of information and ideas to help contribute to the prosperity of the global society. Major activities of the institute include research and studies, policy proposals, joint research, and outreach. It is also involved in developing and succeeding projects on the basic philosophy of the EXPO 2005 by managing the intellectual property rights of Morizo and Kiccoro, the official mascots of the 2005 World Exposition, Aichi, Japan, custodian of the official published documents and photo collections, information dissemination using these documents and outreach activities as well.

Global Climate Change Institute, Tsinghua University, China

The Global Climate Change Institute (GCCI) is the research centre of the Tsinghua University established to address climate change policy issues and integrated sustainable development strategies on energy, environment and economy. The centre also acts as a significant research base in the area of the management science and engineering in Tsinghua. Since the 1980’s, the GCCI/INET has been actively involved at both the international and domestic fronts focusing on climate change policy issues and energy, environmental and economic challenges, by acting as an essential advisory and decision-supporting institution for the government. The Institute has been involved in numerous research areas and has significant expertise in the field of climate change. Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) was established as an initiative of the Japanese Government in 1998. The research institute conducts pragmatic and innovative strategic policy research to support sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. In the face of the challenges that the Asia-Pacific region faces, the mission of the IGES is to create effective strategies and propose practical solutions to support sustainable development, particularly in the region, while looking ahead 50 or even 100 years into the future. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to play an important role in international efforts to deal with climate change and other critical environmental issues, and thus it is vital to carry out appropriate policy proposals based on conditions in each area of the region, which is characterized by diversities in terms of economy, politics, culture, and natural environment. The IGES focuses on enhancing collaborations with a broad range of stakeholders such as national governments, local authorities, businesses, non-governmental organizations, citizens and experts, to carry out strategic policy research from an Asia-Pacific perspective and to disseminate the results around the world, so that it can contribute to the transition towards a sustainable society.

Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS), Iran

The IPIS was founded in September 1983 in Tehran as one of the first think tanks in Iran after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 with the task of leading and encouraging the study and research on issues relevant to the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The IPIS is a sub-division of the Deputy Foreign Ministry for Education and Research. The scientific and analytic findings of the Institute are made available to senior policy makers and interested scholars in the form of books, journals, bulletins, and reports. The Institute of Energy Economics, Japan

The Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), established in 1966, is certified as an incorporated foundation by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. The institute aims to carry on research activities specialized in the area of energy from the national economy perspective in a bid to contribute to sound development of the Japanese energy-supplying and energy-consuming industries and for the improvement of people's life in the country by objectively analyzing energy problems and providing basic data, information, and reports necessary for the formulation of policies. The IEEJ has expanded its scope of research activities to include topics such as environmental problems and international cooperation closely related to energy. In October 1984, the Energy Data and Modeling Center (EDMC) was established as an IEEJ-affiliated organization to carry out tasks such as the development of energy data bases, building of various energy models, and econometric analyses of energy. In 1999, the EDMC was merged into the IEEJ and began operating as an IEEJ division under the same name, i.e., the Energy Data and Modeling Center. The IEEJ vision aims to "Considering the Energy-Environmental Issues of Japan and Asia from a Global Perspective and Proposing Policy Solutions".
