Formed in 1997, The Alliance for Global Sustainability is a partnership of four scientific and technological universities – the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The University of Tokyo, Chalmers University of Technology, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and their associated partners. It was formed in 1997 in the conviction that closer collaboration among some of the world's leading research institutions would lead to faster progress towards sustainability.

Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre, Japan

 

The Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC) was established as an affiliate of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) in 1996 in Tokyo, pursuant to the Action Agenda adopted by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders at the Osaka Summit in November 1995. The Government of Japan generously agreed to host and finance the Centre. The primary objective of the APERC is to foster understanding amongst APEC economies of global, regional, and domestic energy demand and supply trends, energy infrastructure development, energy regulatory reforms, and related policy issues in view of the regional prosperity.

Center for International Climate and Environmental Research-Oslo, Norway

 

The Center for International Climate and Environmental Research – Oslo (CICERO) was established by royal decree in 1990 by the Norwegian government. The CICERO is an independent research centre associated with the University of Oslo. The CICERO conducts research on and provides information and expert advice about national and international issues related to climate change and climate policy. Its mission is to conduct research and provide reports, information, and expert advice about issues related to global climate change and international climate policy with the aim of acquiring knowledge that can help mitigate the climate problem and enhance international climate cooperation.

The Centre for Energy, Environment, Science and Technology (CEEST) foundation is an independent research institution whose objectives are to undertake research and studies in areas related to energy, environment, science, and technology. Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands, Netherlands

 

The Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) develops high-level knowledge and technology for a sustainable energy system and transfers them to the market. The research activities at the centre focus on efficient use of energy and infrastructure, deployment of renewable energy sources, clean conversion of fossil fuels, and development of energy analyses and policies. The ECN aims to carry out groundbreaking research that will have a major influence on energy transition and brings technologies to every stage of development. The ECN focuses on the needs of government and industry, while it also conducts contract research for companies and governmental institutions and to a large extent for the European Union. The ECN also generates income via licences and spin-off companies. Additionally, the ECN collaborates intensively with outer knowledge institutes and universities.

International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria

 

The IIASA is an international research organization founded in 1972 that conducts policy-oriented research into problems that are too large or too complex to be solved by a single country or academic discipline: climate change that has global reach requiring international cooperative action or common concerns at the national level, such as energy security, population aging, and sustainable development that need to be addressed. The IIASA is sponsored by its National Member Organizations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. It is independent and completely unconstrained by political or national self-interest. The core research themes are Environment and Natural Resources, Population and Society, and Energy and Technology.
